Sam was a big hit on the trip; he made his rounds and got to spend time with everyone. My sister L absolutely loved being around him and helping out with everything (although her help with changing dirty diapers was sometimes counter-productive). She loved to sing "You Are My Sunshine" to Sam, and pretty much sang it incessantly for a few days. I must have really been affected (or annoyed?) by all of the singing; last night J said that I was talking in my sleep, telling L to be quiet!
Here are a couple of my favorite pictures from the trip:
Since Sam and I left Seattle before we could even open our presents, we had a mini-Christmas last night. Here's Sam's big present:
J and I always have made fun of "themed" baby toys that have loud colors and designs. What baby is going to care about whether its toys have a rainforest theme, a jungle theme, or a safari theme? Honestly, such busy and loud decorations make me feel kinda stressed out. However, this exersaucer decorated with farm animals was infinitely cheaper than any of the other ones, and it isn't as busy as some of the other ones out there. So, we broke down and got it. Sam likes it so much that I think it will be a stress reliever for me, despite the bright colors.
Some things J and I got for Christmas:
- A book on Caravaggio (me).
- A book on Bernini (me).
- Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (me).
- The Dark Knight Batman film (J).
- iTouch iPod (J).
It was kind of fun to have two Christmases. Maybe we'll have to do that again another year, provided that J and I don't have to be apart again!

Sam is so cute!! I love the pics with your family. Everyone looks like they are having a really good time. I chuckled at your comments about the ExerSaucer. I feel the same way. We broke down and got one too...and a Pooh walker (you know how much I hate Pooh but it was at least in muted colors). The Step and Ride car/walker that Carter got for Christmas has really bright colors on it too, but it keep him entertained and I just put it away when we have company over. It is so funny how you swear you'll never do this or that but when it comes down to it you'll do anything to have a few minutes with both your hands free. If it makes you feel better your are not alone in your opinions.
I'm glad you had a good Christmas -- the constant singing and all :)
You'll have to give us an update a couple months down the road on Sam's Christmas present -- to see if it has driven you and J crazy ... all that noise and bright colors, oy. Perhaps only a baby could really love it after all.
P.S. If I haven't ever told you, I really really (and I mean REALLY) appreciate and agree with your views on marriage/parenthood, etc. It's so nice to see practical views in a sea of such obnoxious views that is so prevalent in mormon/utah culture. Thanks :)
I can't believe how old your siblings are! I guess that's what happens in 10 years huh? :) You will love the exersaucer. I kept ours in the kitchen so I could put Grace in it while I was making dinner. It is fabulous!
