adam lambert = indulgent

For this whole season of "American Idol", I've really liked Adam Lambert's performances. He is a great singer and has an amazing amount of control in his upper range. His vocal talent is quite phenomenal. However, I thought that tonight's performance of "Ring of Fire" was excessively indulgent and ridiculous. And also, uh, strange? Using the sitar in the accompaniment was kind of cool, but really, everything was a little "too much" for me. Plus, I don't feel like Adam shows any kind of connection with his music - everything seems really contrived and showy. I haven't connected with his personality either. Really, does the audience know much more about Adam Lambert besides that he's hungry for fame and wealth?

Each week I am increasingly drawn to Matt Giraud and Danny Gokey. I like both of their personalities and feel like they use music as a true means for self-expression. Danny and Matt don't have as much control over their vocal range as Adam, but I think that their expressivity and musicality makes them more appealing. If Adam doesn't start to show more self-expression and personality in his performances and interviews, I think Matt or Danny might win the competition.

What did other people think about the performances tonight? J thinks that Alexis will leave, and I think (hope!) that Scott will go.

Here's what's interesting to me: I watched Adam's performance and actually thought, "Well, this is the first time that I've been able to tell who he REALLY is."

I've always thought he seemed so mysterious. Certainly, he's very talented and his past performances have been great, but tonight I felt like this was him being who he really is and giving a performance that he's most comfortable with.

Seriously, did you see the way he moved his body during that performance? That kind of music and theatrics is probably the real him ... and now that I've seen some pics of him in drag online, I'm convinced.

Problem is, I don't think the "real" him is something the general population likes.

As for everyone else: Matt's performance was terrific, Anoop was great. Danny had an off week, but he'll be better next week. And I'm with J on this one; I think Alexis is next to go.

confession: last night was the first time i've ever tried to vote for anyone on american idol. and it was for adam.
it's not even that i thought he was the best performer, or that i want him to win. i just thought the whole thing was so hilariously great and ridiculously divine, particularly in comparison to various other performances which were so sentimental.
but the line was busy every time i tried to call. oh well.

Zillah, I didn't think that you had ever watched AI! When Paula compared his performance to "Kashmir", I wondered what you would think.

I think Adam's performance would have appeared less ridiculous and indulgent if he had a rock band performing with him on stage. Since he was alone, all of his theatricality and contrived-ness was magnified. I realize that rock is supposed to be a showy, rather indulgent type of music - but last night Adam looked too silly without a band to counterbalance all the ridiculousness.

Ultimately, I felt like Adam was "performing" instead of "rocking out", which makes me shy away from any type of Robert Plant comparison, at least for now.

BTW, Zillah, I'm not surprised that you loved his performance! This probably is the first AI contestant that has appealed to your love for classic rock and Zepplin. :)

M, you bring up a good point that I hadn't thought of: that Adam's performance would have been helped significantly by a band being on stage with him ... though, it still would have been weird, but the weird would have been diluted a little.

I'm glad you agree about the band, Emilee. It will be interesting to see what performances Adam does in the future, since there is no doubt that he's going to stay on the show for a while (perhaps to the finals). And you probably are right - this theatricality might be Adam's "real" personality. If that's the case, I think he will become less appealing to the general public.

Oh wow, Adam just bugs me. Last night was too much! I think it definitely showed his own personality/style. It reminded me of Led Zeppelin as well, but they were, well...cool. I mean, is Adam a boy or a girl?? His eyebrows are better maintained than mine! But, back to the reason he's on this show, he does have a great voice and he won't be sent home or awhile. Same with Megan, that song was so HER last night. So quirky. But her little shimmy dance has GOT. TO. GO.

I totally agree with everything you say--it was a theatrical performance. And it was certainly silly. I still don't know why I love it. I'll blame it on my meds.

And it does not = Kashmir. Most closer to glam rock. But Paula isn't really terribly precise with her music references.

I've blogged about it to try and make sense of my fascination with this performance. I don't know what's come over me...

Yes I LOVE Matt and Danny. And Kris is okay, if you like backstreet boys. I still like Megan a lot. I think she's really unique. Little Rounds can go for me, oil rigger, Scott etc. I'm glad Alexis left. She BUGGED.

I love your cute family! And, I love that you're an A.I. viewer. So, Adam. I'm fascinated by his vocal talent, but he kind of weirds me out, personally.

I am a huge fan of Kris's voice. I thought he did amazing this week. I also really like Danny and Alison.

Adam is actually my favorite! I know I'm writing a week late about this, but I especially loved his performance this week. His voice is just SO beautiful and flawless! I also really like Danny, Matt, and Kris, and I think the final 2 should be Adam and Danny, if they both continue like they have been. The only girl I like at ALL is Allison. The others can go!!
