don knotts

This past weekend, while watching Don Knotts on the Muppet Show, I discovered that J was not familiar with Don Knotts. I was shocked. But now that I think about it, maybe I am the anomaly. Do you know who Don Knotts is? Did you ever watch any of his television shows or movies?

As a kid, I would watch Don Knotts on "The Andy Griffith Show" reruns. I think my favorite show with Knotts, though, is The Incredible Mr. Limpet (see promo photograph above). I often wondered if this movie was made to compete with Disney's Bedknobs and Broomsticks, since both movies were musicals, incorporated cartoons with human actors, and had plots which revolved around World War II. I guess that can't be the case, since Limpet was made in 1964, and Bedknobs was made in 1971. However, I realized this morning that Limpet could have been the Warner Bros. competition for Disney's Mary Poppins, which was also released in 1964. Mary Poppins also is a musical and incorporates live action with cartoons.

On a side note, a new version of The Incredible Mr. Limpet is scheduled to come out in 2011. Johnny Depp is rumored to be working on the film, I assume as Henry Limpet's character. It sounds like it might be fun.

Anyhow, for those of you who haven't seen Don Knotts before, this is a funny clip from The Ghost and Mr. Chicken:

What's your favorite Don Knotts film?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!

There are people who do not know Don Knotts?!!!!!? (I hope you can sense the shock in my overabundance of exclamation points).

My dad's favorite show was "The Andy Griffith Show" so I grew up watching the old reruns.

I also loved the Don Knott's movie, "The Apple Dumpling Gang"

I cannot believe he did not know Don Knotts!!! This is insanity. My favorite Don Knotts "work" is Three's Company. I loved his crazy polyester shirts. Sometimes when I am up in the middle of the night with H I catch the reruns on TVLand and he still makes me laugh.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is one my family's FAVORITES!!! Oh wow, I haven't seen that in so long - I may have to go on a quest to find it now. We watched Apple Dumpling Gang alot too! Don Knotts is hilarious with a capital H.

Oh yeah, "The Apple Dumpling Gang" is great. Good call, e and joolee! I need to watch "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" again, too. My best friend Katie used to love that show, and we watched it while we were in high school. I remember his nervous speech (the one I posted here), but that's about it.

You know, Shauna, I haven't ever seen "Three's Company." I'll have to look for some episodes on Netflix or YouTube. Or maybe I need to get up in the middle of the night to catch a few laughs. :)

Hum. Is this a generational thing? Like the French loving Jerry Lewis more than any single American (except you, M)? Have people born after 1980 "rediscovered" Don Knotts?? I just don't have much nostalgic fondness for him, although he WAS in a kids movie I really obsessed over called "No Deposit, No Return", which I can't remember now at all, but was apparently a cinematic triumph in 1976...

Know him, love him, miss him. I mean come on, it's Don Knotts! If I had know that J didn't know about him way back when, I would of corrected that error. Oops.

Aunt B, you bring up an interesting point. Actually, my mother-in-law said that she never introduced J to Don Knotts because she thinks that he's annoying. So maybe people who grew up with Don Knotts don't really like him? Or maybe people born after 1980 have rediscovered Don Knotts, like you said. I think it's most likely, though, that I just have friends who share similar interests in old films/actors. :)

I'm glad to see that there are Don Knotts fans out there!

Hmm M, J is kind of weird. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is one of the best movies ever... and who doesn't know who Don Knotts is? Answer to that...J. He is all on his own with that one.
