I have to admit, I was a little surprised to hear the news. I think Ellen is a great entertainer and will add a lot of funny, witty commentary to the judge panel, but I'm surprised that she was selected. After all, she's not a singer.
Do you think it matters that Ellen isn't a singer? I think it would definitely be more helpful for the contestants, but on the other hand, maybe it isn't so important. After all, Paula is a singer and she never made many substantial comments about music or vocal technique. Ellen definitely will be an improvement from Paula: even if Ellen doesn't say something substantial, at least it will be funny.
I'm especially curious to see what kind of a dynamic is created between Ellen and Simon. Will they get along?

Boy, don't you think she'll add some levity AND keep the venom and "dawgs" in check?
I've still never seen American Idol. But! I have seen Finding Nemo, and Ellen wasn't bad singing "Just Keep Swimming" and talking(possibly singing?) in whale. Maybe she has some hidden talent there.
I’m glad you posted something. I’ve been worried about you since I haven’t noticed as many art history blogs. Hope everything is okay …
Now, in regards to this Ellen business.
I am NOT a fan of this idea. I like Ellen. I think she’s fairly funny. BUT I am not in love with her like the rest of the country is. Sure, she’s funny, but I have yet to be caught up in her fun, dancing ways. I appreciate her humor, I’m just not floored by it.
Plus, she’s not a singer (as you said). I realize that Paula didn’t contribute a lot, but there is something to be said for the fact that the panel of judges have all represented real-life areas of professional music. What has Ellen contributed in the world of musicians? Um, nothing. While there’s always merit to having a real person to judge so that they can represent America and just say, “Yes, I liked it” or “No, I hated it”, we (the audience) kind of count on the judges to be the professionals and have educate us with their opinions.
She may add some witty remarks, but isn’t that what Simon is already there for?
And I’m not sure how it’ll go with her and Simon. I’ll bet he kind of just ignores her. I just can’t see him flirting with her the way he did with Paula.
You know, you can't really call Paula a singer. Can you? I would probably post her occupation as ditz, or something, but not singer. I always wondered why she was on the show in the first place. But....
Hm, yes, I wonder what Simon and Ellen's relationship will be like - we know that Ellen and Simon def. won't be flirting, right? But wow, I'm very surprised. What the heck are they thinking? I'm sure any kind of singing talent would be more helpful than stand-up comedy, but I guess we'll see.
I don't think I would call Paula a singer --- she is a dancer and entertainer. However, I LOVE Ellen, and I think she is kind and will add that element to the show and keep Simon from being and a*******
Oh wow, I hadn't heard about this! Where have I been? :) It should definitely be interesting! I hope she does a great job and has something substantial to say to them, rather than just funny cracks all the time. We'll see!
