Something strange is going on at our house. I think our immune systems have decided to give out on us. Or maybe we're just turning into hypochondriacs. Over the past two months, it seems like at least one member of our family has been sick at any given time. Okay, it hasn't quite been that extreme, but we are usually sick or have just recovered from some sickness. And this past weekend has been no different. All three of us have a miserable cold. I just shot this picture of J, who has taken to walking around the house with both a Kleenex box and trash can.Anyhow, I thought I'd jot down all of the colds/viruses that we've experienced over the past few weeks. I'm sure this won't be very interesting to other people, but I want to remember all of this drama. Maybe when this is all over, we'll be able to review this list and be slightly amused at all of our misfortunes:
- First week of February: Sam gets a high fever which lasts for several days. I've never seen my little buddy be so miserable in his life. We finally take him to the doctor and learn that he has an ear infection. He's put on antibiotics for the next ten days.
- Second-third week of February: I come down with a sore throat that turns into laryngitis. I have to cancel some of my classes and end up speaking in a constant whisper to J during Valentine's Day.
- Second week of March: Sam comes down with a really bizarre vomiting virus. He seems to act like he feels fine, and then the virus strikes without warning. 'Nuff said.
- Third week of March: Sam and I feel sluggish over the weekend.
- Fourth week of March: Sam comes down with a really nasty cough and cold. We spend a whole week trying to recover. J and I end up getting the cough too - and the cough has persistently lingered for all three of us (until present).
- Beginning of the second week of April (this past week): Sam comes down with a fever on Tuesday. He wasn't complaining about an ear infection, but did mention that he wanted to adjust his pillow so he could "sleep on his ear." I give him the remainder of the antibiotics which we got in March (see first bullet point), and the fever went down after two days. Hopefully we were able to stave off an ear infection while it was in its early stages.
- Latter part of the second week of April (this past week) - present: Sam's cough (see two bullet points above) comes back with a vengeance. The coughing wakes Sam up (and wakes everyone else) consistently every 15-30 minutes at night, and nobody gets much sleep. We all sleep a little better on Thursday night, but not by much. J wakes up with a cold on Friday morning, and stays home from work. By Saturday morning, all three of us are feeling miserable. Sam is feeling the best out of the three of us, J feels the worst. My voice is a little more hoarse (and my throat is more irritated) than the boys, and I'm paranoid that I'm going to get laryngitis again. Man, if I lose my voice during this busy school quarter, I'm going to be livid.
Who else has been battling sickness this past winter? Is my family an anomaly or have others been constantly battling viruses/colds?

Um, yeah, while we missed the flu this year-- Nat was just treated for pneumonia last week. Good times. Hope your family and you are through the worst of it!!!
No fun at all! Especially when you throw moving into a new house into the equation. :( We've had a little sickness around here (mostly Kaylee with a runny nose & cough), but not as bad as you've had it. Hang in there!
So sorry! I can relate. Here's to a healthy spring! Love you all.
Being sick is the worst--I am sorry. I second a healthy spring for your family.
Knowing that you just moved, I might gently suggest that it could be the combination of stress and the stirring up of dust, mites, and other little delightful germies related to the move. Would it be worth it to get a professional eco-cleaning service in there?
Here in Portland, you might hear someone (not me) say that you need to get the Chi flowing after a move to a new space. I'm not your woo-woo auntie, but I am a fan of not being sick, and houses that have been sitting stagnant for a while might be ripe with hidden germs.
Also daycare can turn S into a cute little vector of disease faster than he can recite the alphabet, as we have learned.
I am so sorry, Monica! What a nightmare. I feel like Sophie either has a cold, is recovering from a cold, or is coming down with a cold at any given moment...so I can somewhat relate... I hope you guys get feeling better soon!
On average, kids get 6-10 colds a year and germs travel quickly in places like nursery at church and daycare. Unfortunately for parents, kids are really great at passing on those germs to family back at home. Because bacteria and viruses take a few days to incubate, peeps are often contagious a few days before symptoms appear. So, kid looks fine at church but a virus is brewing, she passes it on to other kids at church, a few days later she has symptoms, and a few days after that the other kids have symptoms, etc. And it's an extra bummer that adult bodies just take longer to heal than kids'. Also, when prescribed antibiotics, it's best to finish the full course even if symptoms seem to be gone. If not, the bacteria isn't completely killed off and then often it evolves and comes back stronger and is resistant to that particular medication and then a stronger one would have to be used to clear the infection. Superbugs are a huge problem these days in health care. We sometimes just run out of antibiotics that will work. Hm. Sorry, turned into a lecture. Hope ya'll get feeling better soon!
Literally (and I'm not joking) everyone I know was sick in February and March. Something crazy was in the air in Utah. Jane had ear infections from Jan 26th to Mar 29th, and went through four rounds of antibiotics during that period, and finally had to have tubes put in her ears. Once they were in, her first year molars started coming in and we've been dealing with that for the past two weeks. So I TOTALLY feel you!
