end of tv for 2009

Well, last night marked the end of our watching television - at least for another eight or nine months. And what have I learned, after four months of faithful viewing? Kris Allen is the American Idol and Juliet "I changed my mind" Burke detonated a hydrogen bomb at the Dharma Swan station. Umm...yep, that pretty much sums it up.

But the journey this season has been fun. It was fun to see Norman Gentle return to the stage during the AI finale; I nearly had forgotten about him and some of the earlier contestants like Tatiana del Toro. And I'm so glad that Adam Lambert sang Queen. I've been waiting for that. I'm sure that performance would have made Freddie Mercury proud. (And wasn't it kind of sad to see KISS performing? Those guys are way past their prime - even their face makeup can't hide that fact.)

I'm disappointed that Adam lost, but I don't think the best singers have won American Idol over the past few years (e.g. David Archuleta and Melinda Doolittle). The thing that I found most disconcerting, though, is that Kris was unprepared to win. When the results were announced, his slightly-prolonged stammering and shock made me start to feel awkward. J wonders how Kris will do in the music industry, since he doesn't seem to have an aggressive enough attitude to accept his idol title. I think it's fine that Kris is so humble and unassuming, but it also makes me worried that he won't push himself to do well. It will be interesting to see how he and Adam do in their careers. I hope they are both successful.

So now, J and I won't be watching television very much for the rest of the year. I wonder what we'll do after Sam goes to bed. Read? I guess that sounds fun, even though I feel like I read all day long. Maybe I'll need to do other things during the day, and save my reading for the evenings. Hmm. Or I guess I could start working again on some of my art history research projects. Yeah, maybe I'll do that.

If you don't watch TV in the evenings, what do you do? And what did you think of the AI and LOST season finales? (You can read my thoughts on the LOST finale here).

Sniff...I felt the same way about the finale. Adam was simply the more talented musician. I felt more shocked than anything. And the way Kris stammered and looked like such a goof when he won was not encouraging. Time will tell.

I have to agree with you: while it was sort of sweet that Kris was humbled and surprised by his win, he really seems unprepared for what lies ahead (that and he lacks my idea of serious talent ... but enough on that, right?).

I haven't had cable for a few weeks now and I'm embarrassed to realize how much TV I did watch when I had it. I always thought I was a "minimal" TV watcher. Ha. I feel so out of the loop to hear people talk about TV shows (have you noticed people talk about TV all the time?).

Let me know if you come up with good hobbies. I feel like I read all the time too. I'm thinking I'll write a blog on this, but in the last couple weeks I have read something like 13 books! I'm working and getting ready to move too, so all those books must mean that I spent A LOT of time watching TV. That's pretty embarrassing.

Ditto, we don't watch TV except for AI...every night I either read or sew! Do you sew?? If not, you've GOT to take it up! (although I must admit, sewing for a little girl is alot more fun than for a boy...)

So, even though I don't watch AI, I'm bummed it's over. I always look forward to your comments. When I found out who won my immediate reaction was "hum, I wonder what Monica will think of that." Right now after Ben goes to bed I pack, but in days gone by I would do stuff like, exercise, read, write in journals, sew, catch up on house work etc. Not all that exciting.

Yeah, I'll probably do a lot more reading now that all this is over as well. Of course, there's always hulu. I just recently rewatched the first two seasons of Arrested Development on it. Pathetic, I know. You're lucky to be done for the year, though. I'm still looking forward to the last season of Monk to start later this summer. And to think I wasn't into any show until I moved to Illinois--this place is ruining me.

I definitely agree. I liked Kris but Adam is certainly much more talented, and I thought it was strange how one of the first things Kris said after he won was "But Adam deserves this." It's true, but still, he should be more confident! It seemed like he would have preferred to come in second to Adam.
You're so right, it's hard to think of things to do at night other than watching TV. I'm bummed that most of the good shows are over now, but I'm pretty psyched for So You Think You Can Dance. Do you watch that one? The first night of auditions was great!

I usually cook. Or Irish dance. Or sometimes write a blog. I think you should do art history research and then PUBLISH what you write.

After Adam sang "Whole Lotta Love" I was SO waiting for a Paige/Plant appearance. I was disappointed that it was Kiss instead...and I had to look away when they stuck out their tongues. Sigh...maybe Paige and Plant will appear on Britain's Got Talent. I LOVE watching that show on YouTube, so mabye you should start doing that at night? ;)

I've thankfully missed Idolmania other than that season where I was recovering from a c-section and also nursing every 3.4 minutes. So Idol-wise, I got nothin'...

However, thanks to my new iPod Touch, I'm spending 44.4% more time watching television (in bed, on a 4" screen) than ever before. Currently Jamie & I share an ear bud and watch 1 episode of Chuck every night.

So don't give up on the great glass God, the possibilities of what to watch are out there. Lurking. Begging you to spend $$ on them...

(also? Arrested Development is the most awesome show ever. Listen to Kiersten...)

We read together. P's helping me with the Spanish Book of Mormon and we're also having a lot of fun going back and reading books from our childhood--usually the ones I didn't really "get" when I was a kid. We've read The Phantom Tollbooth recently and now are reading A Wrinkle in Time.

Well, I for one was delighted by the AI finale, though I was shocked! And, I know what you mean about having to find a new hobby for the weeknights.
