But why is American Idol so boring this season? Can you pinpoint it to one specific thing? For me, I think there are a couple of reasons why the show has suffered. Here's what I think:
- Interesting and talented performers were dismissed too early in the season, like Lilly Scott and Todrick Hall.
- Singers with extreme pitch and tone problems made it too far in the competition (i.e. Tim Urban, Paige Miles, and Katie Stevens). I have to say, though, I am SO. GLAD. that Tim Urban is gone. His incredibly pitchy performances lowered the whole caliber of the show.
- Performers with awkward stage presence (i.e. Lacey Brown, Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia, and Alex Lambert). And aside from performances, how about all of those horrifically awkward, lame comedic segments from last night's "Idol Gives Back" episode? Ugh.
- Producers haven't built up good connections between the audience and contestants. I feel like we don't know much about the personalities of many contestants, especially Casey James.
- Several singers have dated styles and sounds. A lot of the stuff reminds me of the 1990s. Michael Lynche sounds like a Usher/Boyz 2 Men type singer, Lee Dewyze sounds like Dave Matthews, and Crystal Bowersox fits more into a Tracy Chapman/Alanis Morrisette category.
- All of the singers I liked were kicked off weeks ago. Sigh.

I could not agree more.
I keep thinking back to last season -- how so many of us would write up reviews and there was so much commentary and opinions every week. This year? B O R I N G.
I don't watch every week. If I'm home (and feel like putting down my book), I'll watch.
I agree with you on the reasons completely. I have zero connection to anyone that is left. I cannot stand Kara (at all). I miss Paula (hey, at least she kept things entertaining). And everything else is just so lackluster.
Blah.
I think you pinpointed most of the reasons very well.
In past seasons, I don't remember there being a mentor every single week. Rather than getting to know the contestants personalities and histories, we are just getting opinions and face time from other celebs like Miley, Usher, Adam, and Alicia. I haven't learned anything new about the contestants for weeks.
In addition, I think the show has just run its course. There's nothing new to be excited about this year. Not only is there no Adam Lambert to intrigue me every week, but I'm tired of the same commentary by the judges, the same cheesy Ford videos, and the same drawn out results shows. I wouldn't be disappointed if they ended it this season.
I agree with everything you said. I don't even bother blogging about it anymore because I have so many other things I'd rather be doing and that don't annoy me to death. I am sad/disappointed because I feel like a friend I have watched grow and change over 9 years has suddenly abandoned me and gone another way. As much as I like Ellen, I feel like too much time is taken up with the judges' antics and in my opinion it takes time away from what should be the real focus of the show--the contestants.
Luckily Glee is back and so far has not failed to entertain me week after week.
I think you guys brought up some good points - the focus on mentors and the judges' antics have really detracted from the air time given to contestants. I think that has affected the show quite a bit. When will the judges realize that we really watch the show for them or for the mentors, but for the contestants?
