After realizing that we may be limited in our hikes next summer (since Sam probably will be too big to carry), we've decided do some hikes which might be too challenging for Sam next year. So, this past weekend we hiked
Little Si. The beginning and end of this hike had some relatively steep and exposed areas, but the majority of the hike was really pleasant. The shaded trail winds around the forests of the mountain, and the trail is fairly level for long stretches. We walked through some very pretty areas. I think this has been one of my favorite hikes that we have done in the Northwest, despite the fact that the trail was rather heavily trafficked.

We noticed this interesting tree which had roots that arched in-and-out of the ground. In this picture, Sam is sitting underneath the tree roots.

The view of Mount Si from the top of Little Si. We also noticed some interesting hills in the distance (see the left side of the photo). I wonder how they formed.

Sam learned in
this book that mountaineers wave a flag when they reach the top of a peak. He usually waves an imaginary flag when we go on hikes, but we remembered to bring an actual flag this time. He was thrilled.
I'd love to do this hike again, or even hike up halfway and do some of the rock climbing routes. There is also a
Boulder Garden Loop that is an offshoot off of the main trail, which looks fun.

Monica, Thanks for leaving a comment on the blog! I loved all 3 books I read and would recommend them if you haven't already read them. The Help, Peter and the Starcatchers and lastly Wet Desert. If you are interested, the authors are on my book list. Wet Desert was written by a utah engineer from Kaysville it's about a terrorist on the Colorado river-it was a fun read because of Lake Powell and the Colorado river.
The hotel you are thinking about is the Empress-it was beautiful, built in 1908. We didn't go to Buchart gardens but that is where I will go next time.
That video is very cute. He's such a cute boy.
What is the driving time like to get to these areas you guys have been hiking?
I'm glad that you post pictures of your hikes. I feel like I have to experience beautiful scenery vicariously through you because we only have flat farmland for miles upon end here. Great hiking trails is one of the things I miss most about the west.
Thanks for the views from trails I can no longer hike. In answer to your question: the mountains and hills around here are usually volcanic formations.
I love the video of Sam waving his flag. You two are wonderful parents.
Those books sound great, cbleeflang! I've read "The Help," but I haven't read the others. They sound interesting. Thanks for filling me in!
It doesn't take to long to get to many of these hikes, e. This hike was about 20-25 minutes from our house, and some of our hikes have been as close as four miles!
Kiersten, I'm glad that you like our hike pictures. I feel like I write these posts more for myself than anyone else, since I want to remember all of the hikes (and their respective links/directions/trails/difficulty levels). Come and visit us sometime! Then you can enjoy the scenery in person. :)
Thanks for the info, Annette. I wondered if volcanic activity played a part. There must have been some interesting kind of erosion (or plate activity?) to make the interesting hills in the area.
Wow- such beautiful views! Looks like fun.
I think little Si should be a our girls hike day. What an excellent view and I loved the waving
Wow, what a gorgeous view! I am inspired now to take my girls hiking with me soon. :)
