Do you like people to think that you are older than you actually are? Or younger?
I never really thought much about my age until Sam was born. I've always felt that I look a little young for my age, but I didn't really care until I started to tote around a baby. Do I look old enough to be a mom? Or do people start to look older once they have a kid? Does that other mom in the mall look older or younger than me? Am I not "dressing my age" (or "dressing like a mom") if I wear brightly-colored clothes from H & M?
I know of few people who are happy with their age and/or think that they actually look their age. My friend Ixoj lies about her age so that her Korean students will respect her. My cousin Zillah sheared her locks before her PhD program, partially in hopes that she would look enough to be a doctoral candidate.
I wonder when I'll stop wanting to seem/look older.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!
I think a lot about age on my bday too. Happy Bday!
I have always felt I look older than I am. Even in high school I thought I looked 30. There is nothing wrong with that...except I married someone who looks like he may be celebrating his 17th birthday. I joke with Mike sometimes that he is my Vili Fualaau. I don't really think about the age difference until I see it in pictures. When Carter was born I thought I looked old enough to be a mom. Mike looked like a teenage runaway.
I saw on facebook it was your birthday! Happy Birthday :)
Age is an interesting thing ... I'm not sure what I think about looking it. Everyone thinks I'm 24. Seriously. That is ALWAYS the age people think I am -- not 25, not 21, but 24. Such a weird, random number. I take it as a compliment, but at the same time, it's almost offensive when someone hears my real age -- they are always so blown away and "shocked" that it makes me feel self-conscious.
P.S. No place to live in DC yet -- at least not set in stone -- but I'm working on it.
Trust me. It. Happens. SOOOON enough.
(Also - for the last time - happy birthday. Again.)
well, happy birthday!! i guess i didn't check your facebook page today...wow, sometimes i rely on facebook WAY too much. :) I love it when people tell me I look too young to have two kids! but I worry sometimes I'm not dressing my age when my YW beehives or mia maids say they like my outfit or accessories...uh, is that good or bad? I love Forever 21, but maybe I should move on... :)
Happy birthday! I saw that it was your b-day on Facebook.
It's funny that you want to seem older. I'm always interested in looking/seeming younger. I'm not sure why. My whole life I've been the young one--most of my friends in high school were a year or two older, I'm the youngest in my family, and I was 17 when I started college (if only for a couple of months). I guess I just loved the shock factor when people assumed that I was older. I did want to appear older than my RM students when teaching, though, so I can relate to that.
Sorry I missed your B-day on Facebook. Happy B-Day anyway! People always think I'm 18 or in my early twenties. The times I really wished to look older was when the stake YW leaders couldn't tell me apart from my young women and when it was parent-teacher-conference time during my teacher years. Oh well, looking younger isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I do wonder a lot about if/when one should make the transition to wearing more grown up looking clothes. I will never wear mom jeans, holiday sweaters, etc. However, sometimes I see older women (50s-60s) and see how they've let their hair go silver and they look lovely. Their clothing is classy. I think, then, that the trick is to age gracefully, which so few do today in our culture.
That said, I have been finding a few scattered silver hairs upon my head. I just pull them out. Because, hey, I'm only 26 and not ready to age gracefully yet :)
Thanks for the birthday wishes, friends.
And thanks for the comments. I always think it's interesting to find out if my friends like to appear older or younger. Also, it's nice to know that I'm not the LDS woman who gets confused with the Young Women in their ward.
And Shauna, I have a suggestion on how to make Mike look older: hair loss. Jeremy looks a good five years older than me, thanks to his receding hairline! ;)
You do NOT need to start dressing like a mom just because you have a kid. Let's start worrying about it once you're in your mid 30s, shall we? And although I have been known to exaggerate my age to my dear students, I'd much rather look young for as long as possible.
Oh, and happy birthday. Did you do anything exciting?
I can never decide if I want to look older or younger. Some days I think, wow I look way to young to be a mom, and then other days (which are usually rather depressing) I think oh my goodness I look 46 not 26. Sigh. Maybe someday I'll be just content with however I happen to look that day.
PS. A great big belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
