plagiarized posts

I don't imagine that I have an immensely huge following on any of my blogs, but I found out today that my art history posts are being copied and re-posted on a couple of other blogs. I've contacted the person who has been doing this (the same person is behind all of these blogs), and asked him/her remove all of the posts. I kind of doubt that this person speaks English, though, since the posts are re-worded with slightly bizarre synonyms and figures of speech. Some of the word choices have made the sentences almost nonsensical. We'll see if they can translate my email. (Or maybe they'll just reword it and upload it as another post...)

If anyone wants to check and see if their blog is being copied elsewhere online, I would recommend Copyscape. You can also put a little Copyscape footer on your blog page, which may help to ward off potential copycats.

Has anyone else had to deal with plagiarizers taking blog material? What have you done?

I have been hearing about this a lot lately. Bummer (and lame). Did you have to pay for the service?

Luckily, I'm in the clear (not that I ever post anything worth copying). I guess you should be flattered that someone WANTS to copy you. Think of all the freshman art history papers you could be helping to write...

That's definitely a bummer, but then maybe a little flattering that somebody likes what you have to say so much. I know I wish I had as many intelligent interesting things to say as you...

No, you don't have to pay for a basic test by Copyscape. But I think I would have had more results come up if I owned a "Premium" account (I think that's what it's called).

Yeah, I guess I should be flattered that someone likes my posts enough to copy them. But it still irks me. I want my art history posts to be an academic resource, but not a vein for some lame person to get blog traffic and content.

And the ridiculous, nonsensical manipulation of my sentences bothers me too. Argh! I worked hard to write that stuff!

I find my blog on those like, web crawler/spider type sites all the time. Makes me kind of uncomfortable, but at the same time, I don't want to go "private". Have you ever read Ry Ry's blog on going private? He sums up pretty nicely how I feel about "going private" ... to me, it's a last resort kind of thing.

You'll have to keep us posted and let us know if your blogs are removed from that site.

Neal mentioned that he gets that sort of plagiarism thing from his blog sometimes, too. He said that it is usually computer generated for spamming, though, so I don't think it's meant to be personal or anything. They probably just want content for advertising revenue or something--I'm not really sure about the motive for these things, though. These spamming computer programs use a thesaurus also, so that might explain the strange word shifts that don't really make sense.

Consider it a compliment. You have worthwhile stuff to say! Some of your posts have made me think, "Why didn't I come up with that? She's so clever!"

That is awful! What losers.

I read a lot of blogs. And I can't say that, generally, pictures of kids, cats and snarky comments are worth seeing replicated all over the web. Apparently by some SAD someone without babies or kittens (or a digital camera) or sense of humor of their own.

It's funny, though. Since yours are academic, mainly I'm interested in how much of intellectual property laws would apply to a blog.

Sorry you are having such weird stress!!

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Yeah, Kiersten, I think that this person runs some type of computerized blog that employs a thesaurus. So far, they haven't responded to my email or taken off the stolen content. I'm still deciding what to do.

And that's a good point, Ant Bee, I don't know how intellectual property rights would apply to a blog. I might have to look into that.

Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out how I want to battle this out...bah!
